Date: 08.08.2018 Written by Alex Mattingly

Esquire developments proudly sponsor the Sportsperson of the Year award and the Medway Sports awards.

DOUBLE Olympic gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold will be the guest of honour at this year’s Medway Sports Awards.

The two-time Winter Olympic bob skeleton champion from the Sochi (2014) and PyeongChang (2018) Games will join Medway’s home-grown heroes for the biennial celebration of local sporting success.

Nominations are now open for this year’s awards which will once again shine a light on the achievements of Medway’ clubs, teams and individuals to coaches, volunteers and teachers.

Shortlisted nominees in each category will be invited to a gala celebration evening on Friday, 14 December at MidKent College. Gold, silver and bronze awards will be presented to the judges’ chosen winners on the night.

Previous individual winners have included gold medal Olympic hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch and Paralympic gold medal winning skier Charlotte Evans.

Medway Council Deputy Leader and Community Services Portfolio Holder Cllr Howard Doe said: “The Medway Sports Awards are a wonderful celebration of the hard work and dedication shown by athletes, coaches and hard working volunteers across Medway’s professional and community clubs. I look forward to toasting their achievements in December.”

Leigh Willis, Chairman Anchorians FC described winning Youth Club of the Year at the last Medway Sports Awards as “a real honour and privilege” for his club.

He added: “Like all grass roots clubs we do it for the people, giving them an opportunity to participate, learn new skills, make new friends and ultimately have fun.

“As volunteers delivering this at times is a hard task, but when you see your members enjoying themselves is a great reward, but getting that extra bit of recognition for all that hard work, really does make a difference and make it all worthwhile.”

The awards cover achievements during the period 1 October 2016 to 26 October 2018. You can make nominations until Friday 26 October 2018.

The Medway Sports Awards are organised by Medway Council.
